Here are notable new grant awards compiled by The Chronicle:
Mulva Family Foundation
$75 million to the University of Texas’s Dell Medical School and MD Anderson Cancer Center for a neuroscience clinic and treatment of melanoma and prostate cancer.
Hortense and Louis Rubin Dialysis Center
$7.25 million to create an eponymous community-health fund at the Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region in New York State. The fund will use a competitive grant-making process to award money to nonprofits that help people affected by kidney disease.
Lilly Endowment
$6 million to Benedict College, Claflin University, and Voorhees College, all historically black institutions in South Carolina, for programs designed to help students find jobs after graduation.
John A. Hartford Foundation
$5.5 million for efforts to boost “age-friendly” health systems that improve care and lower costs for older adults. Recipients include the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, the American Geriatrics Society, and the Education Development Center.
Independence Blue Cross Foundation
$3.1 million to health centers and human-service nonprofits in southeastern Pennsylvania whose programs increase survival rates for sudden cardiac arrest.
Kenneth Rainin Foundation and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation
$1.7 million to provide technical and financial support to arts organizations in Oakland, Calif., seeking to invest in affordable, permanent living and spaces. Through the nonprofit Community Arts Stabilization Trust, groups will be eligible for grants of up to $75,000. The funding also supports a staff position in the Oakland mayor’s office focused on the problem of artist displacement.
Jewish Healthcare Foundation
$1.52 million to multiple nonprofits, including the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh and United Way of Allegheny County, and to create a health-care website to inform policy makers and the public about innovations in medicine.
UniHealth Foundation
$1.28 million over three years to support Esperanza Community Housing Corporation’s efforts to reduce asthma attacks in South Los Angeles.
Goldhirsh Foundation
$1 million to winners of the foundation’s annual My LA2050 Grants Challenge, designed to elicit ideas about improving Los Angeles. Winners include AltaSea, the Opportunity Fund, and Covenant House California.
Community Foundation of Elkhart County
$1 million to renovate the Goshen Theater in Elkhart, Ind.
