Nonprofit groups in western Pennsylvania’s Allegheny County will be asked in the coming months to demonstrate to county officials why properties they own should continue to receive tax exemptions, reports the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
County Executive Rich Fitzgerald said Tuesday that thousands of local charities will receive an order by letter to “reapply or resend us some information justifying why they are qualified to be tax-exempt.”
Addressing Allegheny council members in his annual “state of the county” speech, Mr. Fitzgerald said the order reflects a 2007 county law requiring reviews every three years to determine if a property is used solely for charitable purposes.
