National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell was paid $35-million in 2013, The New York Times reports, citing the nonprofit league’s latest Internal Revenue Service filing. Mr. Goodell’s compensation was about 20 percent lower than in 2012, when he received a one-time, $9.1-million deferred payment.
The 2013 wages included a $3.5-million base salary and a $31.1-million bonus approved by the 32 NFL team owners. The league office signed major television and sponsorship deals, settled a landmark suit brought by players over concussions, and boosted its revenue by 11 percent during its 2013 tax year. Mr. Goodell’s pay “is a fair reflection of his leadership and contributions during the year,” said Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank, who chairs the league’s compensation committee.
