A roundup of notable gifts compiled by The Chronicle:
St. John’s College
Former investment bankers Ron Fielding and Warren Spector gave $25 million each to shore up the Annapolis, Md., college’s endowment and support its annual fund.
Mr. Fielding is a retired executive of the Rochester, N.Y., division of OppenheimerFunds. He graduated from St. John’s in 1970 and is chairman of its Board of Trustees.
Mr. Spector, a 1981 St. John’s graduate, is a former co-president of Bear Stearns, a once-mighty investment firm that crumbled amid the 2007 mortgage crisis.
Chan Zuckerberg Biohub
LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman and his wife, Michelle Yee, pledged $20 million to the new nonprofit laboratory established by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, pediatrician Priscilla Chan.
The lab brings together researchers and clinical scientists to develop disease treatments and solutions for global health problems. Mr. Hoffman will join the organization’s board.
New York University Stern School of Business
Brothers Lorenzo Fertitta and Frank Fertitta III donated $15 million to endow a new program for active-duty U.S. military members and veterans entering the business school’s MBA program next year.
Lorenzo Fertitta earned an MBA from the Stern School in 1993 and runs Zuffa, a sports-promotion firm that specializes in mixed martial arts. Frank Fertitta is chief executive of Station Casinos. The brothers own both companies.
University of Cincinnati
Margaret and Michael Valentine gave $5 million to back construction of a new sports arena.
Mr. Valentine earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the university in 1973 and founded Cincinnati Microwave, a manufacturer of radar detectors. He and Ms. Valentine later founded Valentine Research, a company that designs, manufactures, and markets consumer electronics.
Ms. Valentine serves as vice president for the company. She earned two bachelor’s degrees from the university in 1971.
University of Oregon
Edward and Cynthia Maletis donated $5 million to endow a professorship in the business school.
Mr. Maletis, a 1976 Oregon graduate, is the former chairman of Columbia Distributing, a beverage distributor in Oregon and Washington. Ms. Maletis graduated from the university in 1978 with a journalism degree.
High Point University
David Couch and his wife, Stephanie Quayle, gave $3 million to support a variety of university programs.
Mr. Couch is chief executive of the Blue Ridge Companies, a commercial and residential property developer. Ms. Quayle is a country-music singer and songwriter.
