The Chronicle commissioned a national survey of fundraisers, asking them about their job satisfaction and how staff vacancies affect their work. The results reveal that vacancies are taking longer to fill, teams are short-staffed, and burnout is reaching critical levels. Money is likely being left on the table because organizations don’t have enough people to court donors.

While turnover has long been a challenge in the field, the pandemic and a highly competitive job market have exacerbated the problem. However, there are numerous ways to improve retention, and many of them don’t cost a lot of money.
