California’s Claremont McKenna College has raised more than $1 billion, one of the biggest fundraising hauls for a liberal arts institution, thanks largely to small donations from alumni. Ninety percent of donations to the eight-year campaign were less than $5,000, although alumni Robert A. Day, Henry R. Kravis, and George R. Roberts were among 89 contributors to give more than $1 million. The college, which has about 1,300 students, will use the money to increase financial aid, create paid internships, build a host of new facilities, and create 23 named professorships and chairs. Services for New York City’s poorest residents are being decimated by budget woes. Sexual-health clinics; legal, food, and rental assistance; and an effort to help homeless and runaway youth are among the affected programs, which have also been put under new strains from a surge in immigration. A recent report warned that more than half of the indicators used to measure progress in social services have declined. The city has been slow to fill essential positions in the relevant agencies and slow to pay nonprofits that provide some of these services, forcing some of them to close. (New York Times)
