The nonprofit that has become “a nerve center for President Donald J. Trump’s allies in Washington,” has paid at least $3.2 million to corporations led by its own leaders or their relatives since the beginning of 2021. The payments, from the Conservative Partnership Institute, raise red flags, experts say, because it is not clear whether they were the result of competitive bids, whether the leaders with the dual roles recused themselves from the process, and how much, if at all, those executives profited personally from the deals. They did not respond to questions about whether or not they took those safeguards, and one executive offered an incomplete answer on the question of whether any of that money ultimately flowed to the CPI insiders.
